Trex Anchors Designer’s HGTV® Smart Home 2022 Outdoor Plan

Recognized as one of the top 100 interior designers by Architectural Digest in 2020, Tiffany Brooks can design her way around a backyard just as easily as a bathroom.

The designer for HGTV Smart Home since 2016, Brooks used Trex’s outdoor living products to transform HGTV® Smart Home 2022 into a sophisticated and timeless waterside retreat.

“I love that we paid just as much attention to the outdoors as we did the indoors,” Brooks said of the Wilmington, N.C. coastal home. “I feel this house has the absolute best outdoor spaces of any house I have designed.”

This year’s backyard allows for a variety of functions with a deck that runs the entire length of the house and is zoned for three different activities, a second-floor balcony deck complete with glass railing, a kitchen and grill spot and an outdoor shower.

“I love the floor planning,” she said.

The decks are built with Trex Transcend® decking in the rich carmel and honey hues of Havana Gold. “That tone goes almost perfectly with the cedar accents I insisted upon,” Brooks said.

The low maintenance quality of the decking – it never needs sanding, staining or painting and won’t rot, stain or fade – amps the home’s smart features.

“I see so many decks that fade over time. With Trex, that is not a concern,” she said.

Brooks chose the glass railing made from the Trex Signature® aluminum rail collection to accentuate the views beyond. “The glass railing allows for unobstructed views of the pool and the landscaping of the backyard,” she noted.

The pool is anchored on one end by a Trex® Pergola™ Shadow model in Jet Black which Brooks praises for breaking up the monotony of the backyard. “It adds a necessary architectural feature.”

Adding functionality and beauty to the deck is a Trex® Outdoor Kitchens™ component in the Key West style. Its grey color was “the perfect choice with the black, white and cedar accents” of the home’s exterior. “It also adds to the modern feel of the outdoor spaces,” she said.

Stair riser lights, post caps and recessed lights from the Trex® Outdoor Lighting™ collection illuminate the deck making it safer for people to make their way across the space at night. The modern yet subtle recessed lights install flush on the deck boards, while the stair riser lights and post caps give off a warm glow.

Black panels from the Trex® Lattice™ and Privacy™ collections offers “sculptural quality” to the outdoor shower and kitchen areas. Beyond privacy, the screens create “space delineation” that is key to creating the various zones, Brooks added.

And what’s a backyard without outdoor games. A cornhole board set from the Trex® Cornhole™ collection adds to the fun. “The outdoor spaces are very modern and can almost feel too serious,” Brooks said. “The cornhole really adds a casual touch that makes the backyard less intimidating.”
